Machine Animation Tutorial: Tape and Ribbon | Maya 2017 + MASH

Joe explains how to use MASH, Curve Warp and expressions to create a string of tape and a series of spools and pulleys.

Timecodes:

0:00 – Introduction
2:00 – Create sticker element
2:40 – Set up MASH network
4:24 – Add texture to sticker element
5:10 – MASH Curve vs Curve Warp
8:00 – Apply Curve Warp to the tape object
8:50 – Orient the tape with an Aim Curve
13:05 – Use a Custom Attribute to control everything
14:35 – Convert the Curve Warp offset value (0 to 1) to centimeters
16:30 – Write an expression to link the Custom Attribute to the Offset value
18:05 – Convert centimeters (linear movement) to rotational values for the pulleys
20:35 – Write an expression to link the Custom Attribute to pulley rotation
25:35 – Write expressions for other pulleys
27:20 – Write an expression for rotation of the big spool
29:30 – Playblast preview and closing

Scripts + Expressions:

curveWarp.offset = (tapeControl.{customAttribute} / 800)
pulley.rotateX = (tapeControl.{customAttribute} * 360) / {circumference of pulley}
